The Saga Of The Overdue Bills

Yesterday I had that feeling of doom.  That awful feeling in the pit of my stomach.   You know the feeling I'm talking about.  The dreaded "I'm in so much trouble" feeling.  Sigh!

Yesterday afternoon I went to visit my parents who had just returned from an overseas trip.  I check the letter box as I left and saw...

This

Yep

Uh-Oh

Car insurance no less!  I was immediately filled with dread.  That meant we were no longer insured until the premium was paid which also left me feeling a little nervous in case anything should happen before the premium was paid.  The next thought was OMG, I'm so going to be in trouble!  You see, it is my responsibility to ensure bills are paid on time.  IT'S A RULE.

This is not like me.  I don't generally let bills fall overdue, although everybody does make mistakes occasionally.  Right?  It has happened occasionally and I have been spanked for it.  We are still on holiday at the moment.  Just.  Sadly, that's about to come to an end :(  I think my brain must have gone on holiday mode and I wasn't paying attention to some important matters ... like ... um ... bills!

I knew I had to tell Rick.  I also knew that I had to text him to let him know when I arrived at my parents.  You may recall from this post that to get to my parents involves travelling a notorious piece of road and he worries about me when I drive it on my own.  If you recall this post, you may also remember what happened the last time I failed to advise my husband that I had returned safe and sound from my parents.

Once I got to my parents I sent him just a quick text to let him know I was there.  A little while later I sent another text checking in and told him about the bill.  I also said that I would check the other bills when I got home.  We sent text messages back and forth every now and then for the rest of the afternoon and he said nothing about the overdue insurance.  I wasn't sure if I was going to be in trouble or not.

When I got home I checked the rest of the bills and guess what I found?

Yep

Another one!

EEK!

Not only that, I also knew there was another bill due that day that had to be paid.  I knew I had to tell him I had found yet another now outstanding bill, and one that was due that day.  Sigh!  My goose was cooked.  I was doomed.  My buns were going to be well toasted.

With great trepidation I sent another text telling him I had found yet another overdue bill and that one also needed to be paid that day.  I was swiftly told I had better pay them which I immediately did.

What was the outcome of all of this?  Ok, what you really want to know is did I get spanked?

He told me he was not at all happy with the second bill, especially on top of the car insurance.  He understood that being on holiday probably put me out of step.  However, that really is no excuse and that it is my responsibility and I need to pay attention and do better.  Oh, he said a bit more than that.  I received a full Rick sized lecture.  Did I ever tell you he is the king of the lecture?  Luckily for me, I did not get spanked.  I was given grace.

Phew!  That was one close call.  I will definitely be paying for attention from now on!

Close call hun, glad you didn't get spanked. Keep on top of those bills will ya lol
I don't do bills, I'm crap at it, anything to do with money is a bad idea with me. If it was my rule, we would be bankrupt and my backside would be well and truly tanned, ever time :(

    1. Thank you Mustbecrazy, I will :)

Actually, this isn't normally like me. It happened because I was in holiday mode, not thinking of important things.

  2. That Rick is a forgiving nice guy.
Congratulations Roz, on not getting spanked.

Still, as HoH, that makes me wonder: How do our DD ladies really feel about this situation. Serious mistake, serious lecture and then, no spanking but forgiveness?

    1. Hi Bas, you raise a very interesting question, thank you.

I think Elysia summed in up perfectly, I agree with her entirely. I too in the early days used to get tied up with what I thought he was 'supposed' to do instead letting him lead his way. I know longer feel that way.

Rick views a lecture as a tool of discipline in itself and he will either lecture only, or combine it with another form of discipline as he sees fit.

These conversations are always difficult ones. He asks a lot of questions which forces me to acknowledge my mistake, where and how I went wrong, what I could/should have done differently and what I should do in the future. He then tells me his point of view. How he feels about it, why it's a problem, that I could do better etc. I am definitely held accountable for my actions. The lectures are very difficult for me and the hardest part is hearing how disappointed he is in my actions.

Once the lecture is over the issue has been dealt with for us. Neither of us feel as though anything is left unresolved. However, should I ever be left with unresolved feelings, I know he will take care of it for me!

  3. Wow...2 breaks in a row! That Rick ....such an understanding guy. I'm supposing the lecture will now 'stick' for quite some time because you didn't get the spanking?

Sorry about your holidays are coming to an end...I'll 'miss' you terribly :(

The lecture sure will stick! Believe me, they are not easy to go through, as I said to Bas above. The worst part is hearing his disappointment.

  4. Oh ROZ! I found a STACK... literally a stack yesterday too... I felt sick... I have yet to tell "H", but I may not even tell him and just pay them online anyways!

Time has a way of getting away from us at times... darn bills!

Good thing you just got a lecture!

Yes, I was lucky I didn't get spanked. But as I said above, the lectures sure aren't easy to go through either - sigh

  5. Well Roz...last week I waited too late and had to do an expedited payment with a fee of $4.95. I honestly totally forgot to tell M. I ought too. Sigh.

I'm so glad Rick only pulled out the king of lectures! That was really kind.

    1. Hi Susie, Dang, I'm sorry this reminded you! On the bright side, at least you didn't let it go overdue :)

I was lucky I didn't get spanked. I know Rick took into account the fact that it was because my mind was in holiday mode and not fully focussed. As I said above though, those lectures sure aren't easy :(

Ian never gets too bent out of shape about that sort of thing...but I have noticed that he sometimes checks on important things - I guess he knows me well.

  8. I'm glad Rick offered you grace, although some of the lectures they give are worse than a spanking.

If Steve ever makes a rule that bills have to be paid by their due date, I'm in trouble. He prefers they get paid as soon as they arrive, but knows that our budget doesn't always work for that and sometimes if we're waiting on him to get paid, I have to let one or two get past due.

The only money rule we have right now is that deposits have to made at the first opportunity. That came about because I had procrastinated about making the deposit and accidentally bounced our account when I miscalculated how much we had left. I got off with just a lecture that time, mainly because the bank didn't charge an overdraft fee, but he made it clear that it is a spankable offense if it happens again.

    1. Hi Dana, Yes, the lectures sure can be worse than a spanking sometimes, although a spanking does always come with a lecture here - sigh

This isn't usually like me, I generally always make sure bills are paid on time. It was a case of my mind being in holiday mode and not focussed, although that's not really an excuse.

    1. Hi Sunny, that's exactly what happened, my brain was in holiday mode and I pure forgot. This isn't normally like me, I'm usually always on top of this stuff so I know I will get back on track. I think he knows that too which may be part of why he didn't spank.

As I said above though, the lectures sure aren't easy!

  11. Was lovely of him to give grace, understanding about vacation, Roz :) You know, you could use the google calendar to remind yourself, set up dates for each bill, and it will send reminders either to email, or to IM or both.

    1. Hi June, thank you for the tip. I wasn't even aware of it.

Yes, I think the fact he understood that it happened purely because my mind was on holiday mode and not fully focussed played a part. I am usually always on top of these things.

  12. Hey Roz - Think I'd rather take a spanking than a lecture but that's just me. I am 'allergic' to late charges and have a phobia about paying bills late. I created a 'bill paying' spreadsheet and at the beginning of every month, I sit down and fill it out with the due date and pay date of each bill, allowing 7 days between them. That's for online payments, it's 14 days for any snail mail payments. Even if I forget to pay on the day I have charted, I do have a bit of a grace period. I know, anal but what can I do. LOL

Happy Rick gave you grace on this and hopefully, there won't be any more 'lates'.

    Blessings,
    Cat

I'm usually always on top of this stuff, I too am allergic to late charges and aren't comfortable with bills being late. It was purely a case of my mind being in holiday mode and not focussed.

  14. Roz, you should be really proud of yourself for fessing up to your mistake, and for accepting your husbands way of handling it. I think that's a very submissive mindset.
@ Bas, I do think your question is most interesting, so I'll answer.
I think there are times when a gal can be disappointed by "lecture only". Sometimes a spanking can really clear the air or help us to work through guilt. We may even have the expectation that our HOH is *supposed to* spank. But for me to feel my most submissive, (I decided this in our first year) I had to let go of that *supposed to* feeling and just let him lead me the way he felt I should be led. We have many lectures here- fortunately? Unfortunately? Anyway, it works. That's the most important thing. Heck, his raised eyebrows have worked, lol!
That's just me. No doubt others may feel differently.
(sorry for the side discussion Roz. hope you don't mind.)

btw, I had a hard time finding you! For some reason your blog did not connect with your name on your comment @ BDP. I found you on SNP's blog.

    1. Hi Elysia, Welcome! I'm so glad you found me! Thank you SNP :)

I noticed my name doesn't seem to link to my blog on yours for some reason and have no idea why. Frustrating!

Thank you so much for you kind words and for answering Bas's question. I agree wholeheartedly with you. In the early days I too used to struggle with what I thought Rick was "supposed" to do, rather than let him lead his way. That is no longer an issue.

As I said to Bas, Rick's view is that a lecture is, in itself a disciplinary tool and he uses it either on it's own or combined with some other form of discipline as he feels appropriate for the situation. It sounds like perhaps Rick and H may be on a similar wave length.
